Noerine Kaleeba, the founder and patron of The Aids Support Organization (TASO), has underscored the importance of establishing community-level structures to clarify complex HIV/AIDS terminologies for the public.

According to Kaleeba, these structures will effectively target and inform the public about the virus, thereby curbing the rise in infections.

“These community-level structures allow us to explain optimal testing methods for young couples, how to initiate treatment, and ways to overcome stigma while living with the virus,” she emphasized.

Kaleeba conveyed these insights during the HIV Awareness marathon held at the Ministry of Health headquarters on Sunday.

Recent statistics from the Uganda AIDS Commission reveal approximately 52,000 new HIV infections and 17,000 AIDS-related deaths annually. Notably, these infections predominantly affect young girls and women aged 15 to 24.

Kaleeba also stressed personal responsibility and urged individuals with the virus to adhere to their medication regimen while encouraging those without the virus to follow the traditional ABC method.

Renowned gospel artist Levixon, who entertained marathon participants, echoed the importance of standing with those affected by the virus and he called on individuals perpetuating stigma to repent and turn to God.

Comedian Kimuli Kenneth, also known as Pablo, urged those with HIV to stay focused, emphasizing that having the virus is not a death sentence but a life sentence. He highlighted the significance of creating awareness to combat stigma.

“Together, we can fight HIV by raising awareness because awareness helps combat stigma,” noted Kimuli.

Emmanuel Ainebyona, the Senior Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Health, expressed appreciation for all marathon participants and emphasized the importance of knowing one’s HIV status.

Ainebyona also encouraged the public to embrace self-testing mechanisms, facilitating prompt enrollment in care and treatment for those testing positive.

Organized by the Ministry of Health and partners, this marathon was part of the HIV awareness events in December, coinciding with International AIDS Day, where people globally unite to support those affected by HIV and remember those who lost their lives to the virus.
