Police in Hoima city are holding three Regional Referral Hospital Personnel for alleged extortion.They have been identified as Brenda Kamwesigye 39, a Radiographer and resident of Lusaka Middle in Hoima city, Julius Kasadha 54, Radiology attendant and Allan Byabashija 26, a Radiography student. The suspects are alleged to have extorted shillings 350, 000 from Nahiya Namuyaba 54, a resident Kidada village in Kyankwanzi district.
Available information gathered by Uganda Radio Network (URN) reveals that, Namuyaba on July 28, 2026, approached the Hospital with a sick son who was suffering from stomach complications. On July 29, 2026, Doctors at the hospital recommended that her sick son should undergo a CT scan service to detect what exactly he was suffering from for proper medication to be administered. She took her patient to the Radiology department so that he can undergo the CT Scan service.
However, staff at the Radiology department allegedly told her to first pay shillings 350,000 in order for her patient to be offered the services.She reported the matter to top management of the hospital who laid a trap. The hospital management reportedly photocopied 300,000 which they handed over to Namuyaba.
The hospital security team was alerted as Namuyaba was handing over the photocopied money to the three staff.has not been stated which individual she handed the money to al if she gave all three separately. After handing over the money to the three staff, the hospital security team together with the police immediately swung into action and arrested the suspects.
They were immediately whisked to the Hoima City Central police station where they are currently being detained.Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson confirmed the arrests and detentions, saying detectives from Hoima City Central Police Station had taken over the investigations.
According to Hakiza, several other hospital staff are being investigated for alleged extortion. He says, once investigations are done, the suspects will be arraigned in the court to be charged accordingly. This incident follows a series of similar cases at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. In October 2025, five staff members of Hoima Regional Referral hospital (HRRH) and the National Medical Stores (NMS) were arrested over allegations of stealing government drugs.
The suspects were then identified as Habas Kizito, a driver attached to NMS; Bosco Aguerini and Moses Kiiza, also NMS employees; and Ceaser Onegiu and Ayo Justine, both connected to the Hoima Hospital stores department. They were arrested at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. Available information obtained then indicated that NMS had instructed its staff to deliver a consignment of drugs and medical supplies to the hospital using a box-body truck registration number UBK 912F.
However, after the offloading process, the hospital management, upon verification, discovered that the delivery did not tally with the accompanying delivery note issued by NMS. A box containing Morphine syrup was found missing. The hospital immediately initiated an internal investigation before allowing the truck and NMS staff to leave.
The security team then comprising Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) personnel and private guards deployed at the hospital, impounded the truck and conducted a thorough search. During the inspection, a box containing the missing Morphine syrup was recovered from the vehicle, leading to the arrest of the five suspects.
In August 2025, a staff member at the hospital was arrested for allegedly stealing four units of blood from the hospital’s blood bank. Security officers, acting on intelligence, apprehended the suspect before he could sneak the stolen blood out of the facility. URN
