There’s heavy deployment of UPDF and police around Tororo town ahead of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni campaign rally.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is currently traversing the seven districts of the Bukedi sub-region and addressed a rally in Butaleja early in the day and was headed to Tororo district for another one.
The streets within the municipality and the roads leading to it had been blocked by the time of filing this report. Some entry routes like Hillery Street, Tororo-Jinja, Tororo-Mbale, and part of Tororo-Nagongera road were equally blocked.
The traffic had been diverted by security operatives. Motorists from Busia were forced to connect via Malaba Road to Tororo Town, while those from Mbale were asked to use Nagongera Road through Tororo market street, then connect to Jinja highway.
Benard Ochieng (Oben), the NRM flag candidate in the Tororo mayoral race, says that the blocking of the roads and diverting traffic disorganized the movement of people. Museveni was to address a rally at the children’s Lion Park in Tororo Town.
Ochieng said that they want the president to address the issue of the delayed tarmacking of the Nagongera-Butaleja Road.
Joseph Ongwen, a boda-boda rider in Tororo Town, says that he survived getting arrested by security operatives for using the blocked route.
Steven Ochayi, another motorcycle boda-boda rider, says that the diversion of the traffic has enabled them to get to business because people have opted to board motorcycles for town services.
Thomas Ongom, a truck driver from Kenya, says that the diversion of the traffic has inconvenienced his movement as a result of a traffic jam in Tororo Town.
By the time of filling this story, thousands of NRM party supporters have thronged the venue, being entertained by artists like Bebecool, Catherine Kusasira, Gravity Omuttuju, Dan Raggadee, among others, as they wait for the arrival of the ruling party president.
