Two people have died following separate mudslides in Isule Parish, Maliba Sub-county, Kasese District, as heavy rains continue to hit the Rwenzori region. The deceased have been identified as 56-year-old Abraham Kule, a resident of Kamabwe Village, and 18-year-old Filex Bwambale from Bwathu Village.
According to preliminary reports, Kule was cutting down a tree when a mudslide suddenly occurred, burying him alive. Residents later recovered his body about 200 metres away from the tree trunk.
In a separate incident, Bwambale died after a landslide struck the house where he had been sleeping. The impact caused the room to collapse, killing him instantly. Robert Mubunga Kiryamuthaka, the chairperson of Maliba Sub-county, says local leaders are urging residents living in disaster-prone areas to relocate to safer places as the region continues to receive heavy rainfall.
Kasese District has for years remained vulnerable to mudslides and floods, which have repeatedly caused loss of life and destruction of property. In September 2022, mudslides in the district claimed the lives of 15 people and destroyed several homes, forcing more than 30 families to seek shelter at St. Luke Church of Uganda and Kasika Trinity Catholic Church.
