The Uganda Girl Guides Association (UGGA), in partnership with Kabale District authorities, launched an Alcohol Harm Prevention Project on Wednesday to curb rising alcohol misuse and keep children in school.

The two-year initiative will run in Kabale, Rukiga, Kumi, and Pallisa districts. At the launch in Kabale District Council Hall, UGGA Deputy Chief Commissioner Canon Annet Turyatunga said Kabale faces high rates of alcohol consumption and that the project will engage schools and communities to address the problem.

She emphasized that the initiative targets both girls and boys to nurture responsible future citizens. Inspector of Police Margret Kamiranga, in charge of the Child and Family Protection Unit, welcomed the project, noting that alcohol misuse often drives domestic violence, child neglect, and school dropouts. She pledged police support in community sensitization.

Kabale District Education Officer Moses Tumwijukye Bwengye highlighted that the project would help learners understand alcohol’s dangers, improve behavior, and enhance academic performance.

Deputy Resident Commissioner Michael Muramira Kyakashari urged implementers to stay committed throughout the two years, promising that district security teams will monitor progress to ensure the initiative delivers measurable results. URN
