The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has earmarked 500 million Shillings to refurbish its 52 primary, secondary, and tertiary education institutions.
The announcement was made by Brig Gen Richard Karemire, the UPDF’s Joint Staff Officer for Formal Education, Sports, and Culture, during an ongoing workshop for head teachers, head instructors, and principals of UPDF schools at the Land Force Headquarters in Bombo.
Brig Gen Karemire, who is also a former UPDF spokesperson, said the funds will be used to renovate schools with deteriorating facilities. He encouraged administrators to raise infrastructure concerns through the proper channels and to take advantage of UPDF engineering projects typically undertaken during Tarehe Sita celebrations.
“We commend you for your patriotism and dedication,” Brig Gen Karemire told the educators. “You continued teaching even when others were on strike, demonstrating true commitment to service.”
According to Brig Gen Karemire, the UPDF currently manages 52 formal education institutions across the country, including 37 primary schools, 11 secondary schools, four tertiary institutions, two polytechnic schools, one technical institute, and the Defence Forces Institute of Health Services.
“These institutions serve both the children of service members and civilians from surrounding communities,” he noted, adding that this reflects the UPDF’s broader contribution to national education and community welfare.
Meanwhile, Maj Gen Henry Matsiko, the UPDF’s Joint Staff Officer for Political Commissariat, urged school administrators and teachers to uphold patriotism, discipline, and moral integrity as they nurture learners into responsible citizens.
“When formal education, culture, and sports function effectively, our troops and their families maintain high morale, and the nation benefits from responsible, value-driven citizens,” said Maj Gen Matsiko.
He emphasised that UPDF schools form a vital pillar of the Force’s welfare system, not only promoting academic excellence but also instilling the values of service, loyalty, and sacrifice.
“If our students see care and dedication from their teachers, they will naturally grow into patriotic and responsible citizens,” Maj Gen Matsiko added.
Both Maj Gen Matsiko and Brig Gen Karemire commended educators for their continued service and resilience, saying their work embodies the selfless spirit of the UPDF.
