Police in Busoga East have confirmed the arrest of 34-year-old Alifari Omaga, who went into hiding after allegedly killing his wife, Margaret Mayo on Monday. Omaga, a resident of Nakawano village in Kizuba sub-county, Namutumba district, reportedly killed Mayo following an argument about the origin of the 2000 Shillings spent on purchasing a cooking clay pot.

He accused Mayo of using their old broken clay pot to cook for her alleged lovers, serving them food even in his presence. Omaga claimed that Mayo received 2000 Shillings from one of her lovers to buy the cooking pot. According to Logose Esuka, who attempted to mediate between the couple before the incident, Omaga attacked Mayo, cutting and strangling her.

He then covered her lifeless body with clean sheets and placed it on their marital bed. Diana Nandawula, the Busoga East police spokesperson, says that Omaga was apprehended on Tuesday afternoon at Naluwelele trading center in Bugiri district along the Iganga-Busia highway.

Vigilantes noticed him negotiating with a Boda-boda rider, presumably planning to evade authorities by crossing into neighboring Kenya. Nandawula confirmed that Omaga is in custody at Namutumba central police station on charges of murdering his spouse.

She emphasized the grave consequences of domestic violence, highlighting the risks of severe physical harm, psychological distress, loss of life, and potential lengthy jail sentences for offenders. Nandawula urged couples to refrain from resorting to violence in resolving conflicts.
