Micheal Maranga Mawanda, MP for Igara County East, is emerging as the frontrunner for the NRM National Vice Chairperson for Western Uganda.

This, according to party delegates who have started gathering at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds for the NRM party 4th National Conference scheduled for August 27-28, 2025.

With overwhelming support from delegates across the region, Mawanda’s candidacy is gaining unstoppable momentum, positioning him as the ideal leader to steer the NRM’s Western Region into a new era of unity and progress.

Mawanda, a seasoned politician and the Director of Mobilization for the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), has captured the hearts of NRM delegates with his proven track record, grassroots appeal, and visionary leadership.

Delegates from key districts such as Bushenyi, Mbarara, and Kabale have voiced resounding support, citing his deep regional roots, intellectual prowess, and unwavering commitment to the NRM’s agenda.

His recent victory as the NRM district general secretary for Bushenyi, coupled with his long-standing service as MP since 2011, underscores his ability to connect with voters and deliver results.

At a recent rally in Mbarara, delegates praised Mawanda’s ability to bridge generational divides, with many highlighting his role in mobilizing youth and fostering ideological growth within the NRM.

“Hon. Mawanda understands the pulse of Western Uganda. His leadership in the PLU and his alignment with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s vision make him the best choice to represent us,” said Agnes Kiconco, a delegate from Mbarara District.

Similar sentiments echoed in Kabale, where delegate John Tumwesigye lauded Mawanda’s resilience, noting, “Despite challenges, he remains steadfast, focused on unity and development. He’s the leader we need.”

Mawanda’s campaign, launched on March 3, 2025, has been marked by a clarion call for unity and a forward-looking approach to addressing regional challenges like youth unemployment and political inclusion.

His alignment with the PLU, a civic organization closely tied to the NRM, has further bolstered his appeal, with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba publicly endorsing him as a “political prisoner” targeted for his loyalty to the patriotic cause.

This endorsement has resonated with delegates, who see Mawanda as a fresh, dynamic voice capable of reinvigorating the NRM’s stronghold in Western Uganda.

Facing competition from the incumbent, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Mawanda’s campaign stands out for its emphasis on grassroots mobilization and collaborative governance.

His academic credentials, including a Bachelor of Arts from Makerere University, and his role as Vice Chairperson at Kampala International University, highlight his intellectual capacity to tackle the complex responsibilities of the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC).

Delegates believe his experience equips him to formulate policies that address the region’s evolving needs while countering opposition gains from parties like the National Unity Platform (NUP).

“Mawanda’s leadership is what Western Uganda needs to stay united and strong within the NRM.

His focus on practical governance and his ability to inspire confidence make him the best candidate,” said Sarah Muhwezi, a delegate from Ntungamo.

As the NRM prepares to elect its CEC members, with over 24,000 delegates expected to vote, Mawanda’s growing support signals a potential shift in the region’s leadership dynamics.

His pledge to work as a team to address national challenges, coupled with his regional authenticity, positions him as the standout choice for Vice Chairperson.

With the 2026 general elections looming, Mawanda’s candidacy offers the NRM an opportunity to strengthen its dominance in Western Uganda while integrating new voices into its leadership.

As delegates prepare to cast their votes, all eyes are on Mawanda, whose vision, resilience, and grassroots support make him the clear favorite to lead Western Uganda to a prosperous future under the NRM banner.
