The African Nations Championship (CHAN) has grown steadily since its inception in 2009, and for the first time in its history, the tournament is being co-hosted by three East African nations—Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

The 2024 edition, postponed to August 2025, marks Uganda’s biggest football hosting milestone yet, and moment for every Ugandan to rally behind the country’s football leadership and government.

Since its launch, CHAN has showcased the continent’s homegrown footballing talent, with host countries ranging from Ivory Coast (2009) to Algeria (2022).

Uganda now steps onto that historic stage alongside its neighbors, co-hosting the eighth edition as a prelude to the much-anticipated AFCON 2027, which will also be staged in East Africa.

“Hosting CHAN is not just about football. It is about proving that Uganda and East Africa are ready for the global sporting spotlight,” said FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo. “Every fan, every stakeholder, and every institution must take pride in making this a success.”

This year’s CHAN is especially symbolic because some of Africa’s top footballing nations have yet to host the tournament, giving Uganda a unique chance to show the continent its organizational strength.

From modernized stadiums to upgraded training facilities and improved hospitality services, the country is already laying the foundation for AFCON 2027.

Government support, led by the Ministry of Education and Sports, has been crucial in pushing infrastructure projects forward, while FUFA continues to ensure that Team Uganda is well-prepared to compete on home soil.

As the first gane at Namboole on Monday nears, the message is clear: this is Uganda’s time to shine. A successful CHAN not only boosts national pride but also cements the country’s readiness for the continental showpiece in 2027.

“Football is a unifying force. When Uganda succeeds in hosting CHAN, the entire nation wins,” Magogo emphasized.

Ugandans are being called upon to cheer, volunteer, and support the tournament. The road to AFCON 2027 starts here, and history will remember how the nation embraced the challenge.
