Police in Luwero district is investigating the circumstances under, which a worker died in Victoria Sugar factory. The deceased has been identified as Isaac Rwothomiyo, 25, an employee of Victoria Sugar Limited at Ndibulungi village in Butuntumula Sub county, Luwero district.

Sam Twineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson explains that Rwothomiyo was allegedly crushed to death by machines  at around 9;00am on Monday. Twineamazima says that preliminary police investigations indicate heap of waste material alias bagasse that remains after crushing sugarcane and is used to heat the boiler fell on Rwothomiyo before he slipped into the machines hence crushed him to death.

Detectives from Luwero Central Police Station rushed to the scene after getting a report from the human resource officer and  transferred the remains to Mulago Hospital mortuary for postmortem. Twineamazima adds that the machines were being operated without safety measures, which put the workers at risk of death in case of contact .

“Investigation into the case of rash and neglect that caused death of a worker are ongoing. We have recorded statements from workers to help in the investigations,” Twineamazima said. Operations at the factory have been suspended following the incident. The factory management has not yet commented on the matter.

Accidents are not new in factories . In April this year, a worker slipped into rolling machine  and died at China Chan Jiang Steel and Iron factory located in Matugga along Semuto road. In May this year , a staff at Simba cement factory in Tororo died after falling off from a ladder, which he had climbed to repair a transporter conveyor belt.
