On Wednesday, the Youth Go Green (YGG) team joined the Sironko District community to celebrate World Environment Day 2024. The event, organized by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) in partnership with various stakeholders, highlighted the theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience.”

The day began with an environmental march through Sironko town, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of environmental conservation, later, the team participated in tree planting exercises in the Elgon area, focusing on restoring degraded land and promoting sustainable development.

World Environment Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, serves as a global platform for raising awareness and promoting action for environmental protection.

In addition, the YGG team engaged in school debates, discussing pressing environmental and climate change issues. Students showcased their knowledge and passion, presenting innovative solutions to the challenges facing their generation.

Prior to the event, YGG participated in a public dialogue where community members, leaders, and youth shared ideas and experiences. They discussed sustainable practices, climate resilience, and the importance of collective action.

At the event, Dr. Barirega Akankwasah, the Executive Director of NEMA, emphasized that while there is still much work to be done, there is hope and optimism. He noted the significant strides made in environmental restoration that are worth celebrating.

The Youth Go Green team was excited about their contributions to the World Environment Day celebrations in Sironko District. They left with renewed energy, inspired to continue advocating for a greener, more sustainable future.

This year’s theme aligns with the urgent call to restore degraded landscapes, protect essential ecosystem services, and build drought resilience.

Ministers, MPs, religious leaders, opinion leaders, and local leaders graced the occasion.
