A key suspect in the murder of Pamela Tumwebaze, the Director of Student Affairs at Uganda Christian University has been arrested, the police Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) says.
Tumwebaze, 46, was strangled on Wednesday, February 11, at her residence in Guafu West Village, Seeta Ward, Goma Division, Mukono District.
Confirming the development on Saturday, CID Director Tom Magambo said the suspect was apprehended during a joint security operation.
“One of the key suspects in the murder of the late Pamela has been arrested today by our joint team comprised of Police and JATT,” Magambo stated, adding that further details would be provided in due course.
He noted that the Uganda Police Force spokesperson, Rusoke Kituuma, will issue a comprehensive update.
A source familiar with the investigations, which preferred anonymity, told Plus News that the arrested suspect was found in possession of some items believed to belong to the deceased. However, this information could not be independently verified by the publication.
In an earlier statement, police said preliminary findings indicated that at around 2:00 AM, Tumwebaze’s housemaid reportedly saw an unknown man inside her bedroom wearing the deceased’s jeans and stockings. The suspect allegedly fled the scene carrying a laptop bag belonging to Tumwebaze.
The maid and the children later checked on her and found her unresponsive in bed. She was rushed to Namirembe Church of Uganda Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
The arrest marks a significant step in investigations into a case that has drawn national attention and sparked widespread calls for swift justice.
