More than 50 serving and former Members of Parliament from Buganda have gathered at Serena Hotel Kigo in Wakiso District, where they have endorsed Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba for the 2031 presidential election.
The gathering, organised by Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister and PLU Vice Chairman for Buganda, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, brings together NRM and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) supporters from across the Buganda region, including legislators who retained and lost their seats in the 2026 general elections.
The meeting is part of a growing nationwide mobilisation campaign backing Gen. Muhoozi, who formally declared his intention to contest for president in 2031 earlier this month.
Addressing the gathering, Kiryowa said the NRM’s poor performance in parts of Buganda during the recent elections requires the party and its supporters to reassess their mobilisation strategy.
“I witnessed why we performed poorly in the general elections in Buganda. It is important that we rectify what went wrong. NRM and PLU are together,” Kiryowa said.
He has been among senior NRM and PLU figures publicly backing Muhoozi’s political mobilisation. In June, PLU assigned Kiryowa Patriotic Officer number 061 in recognition of his contribution to the movement.
Former and current legislators attending the Kigo meeting include Daudi Kabanda, Aidah Nantaba, Juliet Kinyamatama and James Kakooza, among others.
NRM MP Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo said the level of youth support for Gen. Muhoozi could provide a significant base for the mobilisation campaign.
The Buganda endorsement comes amid an expanding PLU campaign across the country. The organisation has established endorsement registers nationwide and says it is seeking 20 million signatures in support of Muhoozi’s 2031 presidential bid.
The campaign has also attracted endorsements from other senior political figures. Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa publicly endorsed Muhoozi’s 2031 bid earlier this month, describing it as a civic call for him to lead the country after President Yoweri Museveni.
Similar endorsement activities have since been held in different parts of the country, including West Nile and Masaka.
Muhoozi currently serves as Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and chairs the PLU, a movement that has described itself as being in a strategic alliance with the ruling NRM.
