Ethiopia’s President Sahle-Work Zewde has extended greetings to her Ugandan counterpart Yoweri Museveni as the country celebrates the 61st Independence anniversary.
This has been revealed by Ethiopia Ambassador to Uganda, Etsegenet Bezabih Yimenu, in a post on her X platform (formerly Twitter).
“H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde extended a congratulatory message to H.E. Kaguta Museveni, the President of Republic of Uganda for the Celebration of the 61st Anniversary of Independence,” H.E. Etsegenet Bezabih wrote.
The celebrations which will also be attended by various regional leaders, will be held in Kitgum, Northern Uganda, tomorrow, Monday, October 9 under the theme: “Sustaining a united and progressive nation: Taking charge of our future as a free nation”.
Zewde’s congratulatory message to Uganda speaks to Ethiopia’s continuation of its historical desire for an independent, progressive, and self-sustaining continent.
It should be remembered that Ethiopia was among the first independent nations to sign the Charter of the United Nations, and it gave moral and material support to the decolonization of Africa and to the growth of Pan-African cooperation.
These efforts culminated in the establishment of the Organization of African Unity (since 2002, the African Union) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, both of which have their headquarters in Addis Ababa.
Uganda and Ethiopia have enjoyed being strategic partners for long cementing this relationship by signing strategic partnership agreements and Memoranda of Understandings (twenty-four) in Water, Defence, Tourism, Education and Security.
The agreements have further reinforced and mounted the two countries’ stand on common regional affairs such as signing of the CFA.
