Authorities in Kwania District have raised concern over the unexplained death of fish in Lake Kwania suspecting it to be a result of poisoning.
Reports from all the 11 landing sites in the district indicates that a number of fish is dying to the extent that some are washed to shores by water current, while others float in swampy areas.
Calvin Amute, a fish monger at Gweng landing site at the border of Kwania and Amolatar District but a resident of Engoro Alido parish in Chawente subcounty said at times the fishes are seen floating over the waters when they are still alive but two week to swim.
According to Amute, they are scared of handling fish because they do not know what is killing them in the lake.Another fish monger from Chawente sub county, George Otim believes that it may not be poisoning but rather the reducing water level from the lake.
He further warned businessmen against selling dead fish saying it may be harmful to their customers.Ronald Otim, the Kwania district acting Fisheries Officer confirmed the incident saying investigations are ongoing to establish whatever is killing fish in the lake.
He adds that the communities near the affected landing sites are being sensitized on possible causes of such incidents and what should be done to address them.
Moses Ongu Okello, the Chairperson LC3 reiterated Otim’s message saying selling dead fish is not only dangerous to consumers but can also destroy fish business in the whole district. URN
