At least three passengers have died and eight others injured in a head on collision in Luwero district along Kampala -Gulu highway just as the at night just 30 minutes to the end of Eid.
The deadly crash occurred at Nkonde Village, Nyimbwa Sub-County near Kalule trading center in Luwero district along the Kampala-Gulu Highway at around 11:30pm on Friday night. The crash involved motor vehicles registration number UBR 333S Toyota Hiace taxi traveling from Kampala to Amolatar district and UBG 873K Lorry truck loaded with poles heading to Kampala from Luwero side.
Sam Twiineamazima the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson explains that the crash occurred when a loaded lorry attempted to overtake a long queue of cars, a maneuver which resulted in a head-on collision with the oncoming Taxi.Twiineamazima said in the head on collision, three people died on the spot and eight others injured -all passengers in taxi.
He added that policemen from Bombo Police Station rushed to the scene and evacuated the injured to Mulago and Luwero hospitals. The three dead bodies -all male- were conveyed to Luwero Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination. ”Inquiries are ongoing and the public is urged to exercise caution on the Kampala-Gulu Highway, especially during overtaking maneuvers, and to always adhere to speed limits and road safety rules,” Twiineamazima said.
Last Saturday, a driver and conductor of Real Bus company died in an accident in Luwero district along Kampala -Gulu highway. The accident was at Kiwumpa village in Luwero where the bus lost control and rammed into the rear of the Isuzu truck leaving the conductor and driver dead.
For some time now, every week, a section between Luwero -Nakasongola districts along Kampala -Gulu highway registers a road crash. The Savannah Regional Traffic Police blames the crashes on reckless driving, drink driving and narrow roads, among other factors .
According to the Luwero District Health report for 2024/25, at least 475 people were admitted to health centers after sustaining injuries in road crashes involving motorcycles. Of the 475, 21 died. The report further indicates that 13 out of the 181 people also admitted due to other road accidents also died. URN
