Raphael Magyezi, the Minister of Local Government, announced on Wednesday the extension of the term of Local Council I and II, originally set to expire on January 5.
Magyezi emphasized the critical role of local councils in the country and the necessity to avoid a leadership vacuum at that level.
“I inform the nation that, pursuant to regulation 11A (d) of the local government councils regulations, the term of office of administrative unit councils expiring on January 5 is extended for a period of 180 days from January 6,” Magyezi explicated.
Initially set to expire on July 10 the previous year, the government postponed the term for six months, leading to the current extension.
The government cited insufficient funding and logistical challenges for the delay in holding elections.
Currently, several efforts are underway to harmonize administrative units nationwide, further complicating the election process.
Under regulation 11A of the Local Governments Councils Regulation, the Minister of Local Governments, following cabinet approval, has the authority to extend the term of office for administrative councils for up to 180 days at a time, even after the term has officially expired.
During a plenary sitting on July 12 the previous year, legislators urged the Finance Ministry to prioritize funding for Local Council I, II, and women councils. Minister Magyezi acknowledged a budget deficit of 59 billion shillings for the elections and assured ongoing consultations with relevant authorities for a viable solution.
