Rwandan President Paul Kagame on Saturday, July 25, met Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, in Kigali for talks focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and advancing regional peace, security and stability.
According to a statement from Village Urugwiro, the official residence and office of the Rwandan presidency, the discussions centred on the “strong bilateral cooperation” between Rwanda and Uganda, as well as regional peace, security and stability.
Gen Muhoozi arrived in Kigali on Saturday for a two-day official working visit aimed at deepening defence and military cooperation between the two neighbouring countries.
He was received at Kigali International Airport by Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff Gen Mubarakh Muganga, alongside other senior military officials.
The visit is Gen Muhoozi’s latest high-level engagement in Rwanda and comes as Kampala and Kigali continue to strengthen relations following years of strained ties.
The two countries have maintained closer military and diplomatic contacts in recent years, with Gen Muhoozi playing a prominent role in efforts to improve relations.
He last visited Rwanda in March 2025. He had also travelled to Kigali in March 2022, during efforts to normalise relations after nearly four years of tensions that had affected political and economic ties between the two neighbours.
The latest meeting between Kagame and Gen Muhoozi highlights continued engagement between the two countries’ leaderships, with defence cooperation and regional security remaining key areas of mutual interest.
