Police in Mbarara are investigating the mysterious death of Dr. Rukia Abiru, a Senior Health Officer attached to the Anesthesiology department of Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.

According to Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, Dr. Abiru, a postgraduate medical student specializing in anesthesiology at Mbarara University Teaching Hospital, was found dead while lying on her back on Wednesday.

He explains that when Dr. Abiru failed to report for duty in the morning and didn’t respond to attempts to reach her via phone, her colleagues at the hospital became concerned and informed the hospital director. The director in turn informed the police, who entered Dr. Abiru’s residence and discovered her lifeless.

Dr. Celestine Barigye, the Director of Mbarara Referral Hospital and Health Services in the Region, expressed shock over Dr. Abiru’s sudden passing.  He explained the deceased has been working in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), managing patients requiring critical care services.

Halson Kagure, the Public Relations Officer at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, confirms that Dr. Abiru was last on duty on Monday night and was expected to resume duty in the afternoon. Attempts to reach her went unanswered, prompting concern among her colleagues.

Kagure recounts that Dr. Barigye dispatched an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) team, led by Dr. Emma Munyarugyero, to Dr. Abiru’s residence. To determine the precise cause of death, pathologists will conduct an autopsy before proceeding with burial arrangements in her home district of Lira.
