Traders and the community of Bwera in Kasese district are concerned over the delayed restoration of the Mpondwe bridge, which was damaged in December last year.  The bridge connects Uganda to DR. Congo.

Traders say the diversion that was put in place is narrow to accommodate the heavy traffic flow, especially on market days subsequently delaying trade. The bridge got damaged after its culverts were stolen by suspected scrap dealers leaving it to sink in.

Traffic was paralyzed for some days until a new diversion was made days later to allow cargo trucks to cross from either side.  Ayub Tumusiime, one of the residents says that whereas the diversion is facilitating the movement of people and their goods to the main market, concerns about slow traffic especially on market days have emerged.

The Mayor Mpondwe Lhubiriha town council, Sylvester, Mapoze has called for action to fully restore the main bridge.  The Uganda National Roads Authority-UNRA had assured the public that the emergency works on the main bridge would be completed within two.
