The Prime Minister of Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu (OBR), Rt. Hon. Baritazale Kule Benson has urged the public to remain highly vigilant following the confirmation of an Ebola outbreak in the country, warning that the disease poses a serious and immediate threat to communities in the Rwenzori region.
His appeal comes in the wake of heightened border control measures, including the closure of the Uganda–Democratic Republic of Congo border last week as part of efforts to contain cross-border transmission of the virus.
Speaking to journalists in Kasese Municipality, Baritazale described Ebola as a “real and present danger,” calling on residents to strictly observe all preventive guidelines and to comply with the temporary border restrictions imposed by government authorities.
He specifically urged schools to reinforce sanitation and hygiene measures, emphasizing that proper cleanliness standards must be maintained to protect learners and staff from potential infection. Meanwhile, Kasese District Health Officer Bwambale Amoni warned that the situation remains concerning, noting that Uganda has so far confirmed nine Ebola cases, an indication that community transmission is ongoing.
He cautioned traders in particular, saying some continue to prioritize business activities over adherence to Ministry of Health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), a practice he said could accelerate further spread of the virus. Bwambale called for strict compliance with health guidelines, including hygiene practices, screening, and avoidance of unnecessary gatherings.
At the Mpondwe-Lhubiriha border area, traders have meanwhile appealed to the government to reconsider some of the restrictions, especially the closure of fish and cattle markets, saying their livelihoods have been severely affected by the preventive measures. URN
