Seven students of St Mary’s College Rushoroza in Kabale District have been detained over a violent strike at the school. 53 others have been suspended.

One of the students told our reporter on condition of anonymity that the strike was triggered by the suspension of their colleagues Byamugisha Nicholas, Aine Ronnie, Namara Meledizikia, Atukunda Paddy, Nshabamukama Samuel,  Kansiime Assan and Tugineyo Brave for allegedly assaulting a senior one student accused of stealing 40,000 Shillings.

The suspension reportedly angered other students who staged a strike accusing the administration of protecting a thief.  Angry students vandalized school property like window glasses prompting anti-riot police to intervene.

Christopher Monday, the school head teacher confirms the arrest and suspension of students saying that their fate will be determined after the administration meeting.  He argues that the students know school rules and regulations prohibiting assault for any reason.

Kigezi region Police Spokesperson Elly Maate says that the students identified as Abasa Andrew, Agaba Willy, Ahurira Casbert, Munezero Fredrick, Amanya Nickson, Irakiza Timothy, and Mucunguzi Anthony who were ring leaders in the strike are detained at Kabale Police Station as investigations into the matter continue.

Anti-riot police have been deployed at the school.
