At least 27 people have been killed and more than 20 wounded in two separate shootings in South African townships, police said.

The first attack occurred late Saturday in Wedela, southwest of Johannesburg, where 17 people were killed and 15 wounded at a tavern in Extension 3, Gauteng Province.

Police said several gunmen opened fire on people gathered outside the tavern before entering the premises and continuing the attack.

Some customers were reportedly searched and had their mobile phones taken. The suspects later fled in two vehicles, while two other vehicles were set on fire.

Police are searching for eight suspects reportedly armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols. No arrests had been announced, and the motive remained unclear.

In a separate incident early Sunday, gunmen opened fire at a store in Lwandle near Cape Town, killing 10 people and wounding 11 others. Police are also searching for multiple suspects in connection with that attack.

The shootings came days after a separate mass shooting at a house party near Durban in which 11 people, including a pregnant woman, were killed.

Police have opened murder, attempted murder and property damage cases in connection with the Wedela attack as investigations continue.
