Concerns are growing in Lake Katwe Sub-county, Kasese district, after a severe storm tore off the iron sheets from four classroom blocks at Kabirizi Primary School, just a day before the start of the third term. The Sunday storm also toppled an acre of banana plantation that had been a source of sustenance for the school staff.
On Monday, more than 100 pupils from the school had to study under trees, while some were forced to return home. Wilson Baluku, the school head teacher, explained that the storm, following heavy rains on Sunday evening, had blown off the roofs of the classrooms.
As a temporary measure, the students will be studying under trees while efforts are underway to provide alternative shelter. The affected classrooms cater to primary one, four, five, and six students.
Becky Biira, one of the parents, expressed that they would prefer their children to study under trees rather than send them back home. She argued that it’s essential for learners to complete the curriculum on time. Philip Esejemba, the Katwe Sub-county chief, stated that they had reported the incident to the district leadership for immediate intervention.
