Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) say their helcopter crashed on Saturday while landing in Karamoja, North Eastern Uganda.

According to Brig Gen Felix Kulaigye, the defence spokesperson, the incident which involved a UPDF Air Forces helcopter MI 24 (Gun Ship) Registration Number AF 822, happened at around 4pm at Nadiket village 5.3 kilometers west of Moroto barracks, Loptuk Subcounty in Moroto District.

The helcopter, according to Kulaigye, was on routine operations in the area.

“The pilot and all the three air crews who were on board are safe. The scene has been secured for further management,” Brig Gen Kulaigye says.

He explains that UPDF Air experts are working to establish the cause of the crash.

This is not the first crash involving a Ugandan military helicopter. In February 2021, a UPDF jet ranger helicopter crashed near the old airport in Entebbe, killing one Captain Caroline Busingye.

The then UPDF spokesperson, Brig Gen Flavia Byekwaso, said in a tweet that the light blue helicopter was being piloted by two cadet trainees on a mutual training flight.
