The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has released its full list of 38 duly nominated candidates for the upcoming election of the two vacant positions of Uganda’s representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The vacancies arose after Dennis Namara and James Kakooza secured seats in Uganda’s Parliament during the recent general elections, automatically vacating their positions in EALA in line with Article 51(c) of the East African Community Treaty.
The NRM’s list features candidates from across the country, including Kampala, Western, Eastern, Northern, and Karamoja sub-regions. Notable entries include Agasha Juliet Bashisha (Mitooma), Ainebyona Thomas (Mubende), Akampurira Davis (Kamuli), Akol Vankar (Kaabong), and Amal Juliana Obonyo (Karenga).
Others on the list are Balya Beatrice Karungi (Kabale), Bangumya Fred Rwakaizi (Isingiro), Buhaburwa Emmanuel (Kamwenge), Bwanga Philemon (Kampala), Byarugaba James (Kagadi), and Ebal Brownie (Kampala).
The capital, Kampala, dominates the list with several candidates, including Kato Robert, Kiryowa Stella, Kiwanuka Briton, Kyarisiima Israel, Marwaha Katongole Singh Parminder, Mivule Ronald Musoke, and Nanziri Aminah Lukanga.
Also featured are regional figures such as Kisembo Ronex Tendo (Luwero), Kiwanda Godfrey Ssubi (Mityana), Kamateneti Josyline (Ntungamo), Kashaka Mutungi Steven (Kiruhura), and Twizire Nobert (Kanungu), among others.
Members of Parliament of Uganda have already been recalled from recess to elect two new representatives to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) unveiling a list of 38 duly nominated candidates for the highly contested slots.
In a March 23, 2026 communication, Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesigye directed legislators to return for a special plenary sitting scheduled for Thursday, where voting is expected to take place.
The recall follows formal notification from EALA Speaker Joseph Ntakirutimana, who informed Uganda’s Speaker Anita Among of the vacancies and the requirement to fill them before the end of the month.
However, the process has not been without controversy. A section of EALA representatives from Uganda and South Sudan has raised concerns over the handling of the vacancies, alleging procedural inconsistencies and possible violations of Articles 51(a) and 51(c) of the Treaty.
Despite the disagreements, Parliament is expected to proceed with the election, with the NRM’s extensive candidate list positioning the ruling party strongly in determining Uganda’s next representatives to the regional assembly.
