A total of 2,160 out of 3,868 candidates who sat the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) mocks in the Terego district failed. The official examination results, released by the Terego District Primary School Examinations Board, show that 1,298 boys, representing 60.09%, and 862 girls, representing 39.90% failed the mocks.
Kasto Edema, the chairperson of the Terego district Primary School Examinations Board, stated that only 7 candidates passed Division 1, 251 pupils obtained Division 2, 365 achieved Division 3, and 920 candidates secured Division 4. Additionally, 166 candidates failed to appear for the mock examinations.
Edema attributed the high failure rates to poor interpretation of the examination questions by the learners and inadequate syllabus coverage, especially in some lower classes.
Lawrence Guma, the secretary of the Terego District Primary School Examinations Board, expressed dissatisfaction with the current pass rate of 16%. He urged head teachers to work diligently to improve the results in the upcoming final National examinations scheduled for November this year.
Makarious Adrole, the Terego District Education officer, emphasized the importance of proactive efforts by head teachers and their teaching staff in the remaining months to achieve better performance in the district.
Augustine Vuni, the councilor representing Odupi sub-county and chairperson of the social services committee, noted that while the district has made progress in filling vacant positions in the education department, it has yet to translate into improved results. Vuni urged newly appointed head teachers to use their promotions to enhance the performance of learners in their respective schools.
In terms of performance by locality, Leju Town Council emerged as the best with a pass rate of 28.0%, followed by Katrini Sub-county (26.6%), and Odupi Sub-county with a pass rate of 23.9%. Meanwhile, Bileafe sub-county, Omugo sub-county, and Uriama sub-county reported the poorest results, according to the released data.
