Two people have died, and another sustained serious injuries following a fatal road crash at Namasa Village in Nakasongola District along the Kampala–Gulu Highway.
The accident occurred about 110 kilometres into Nakasongola District, according to Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twiineamazima.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a stationary low-bed truck, registration number UAP 609R/UAQ 816C, had been parked facing Kampala and was obstructing nearly half of the lane used by vehicles travelling from Gulu towards Kampala.
Police said a Toyota Sienta, registration number UBM 906X, travelling from Gulu to Kampala, collided with the rear offside of the stationary truck before veering off the road.
Two passengers in the Toyota Sienta were pronounced dead at the scene. The deceased were identified as 17-year-old Emirina Bukirwa Emirina and an adult male identified only as James.
Their bodies were taken to Nakasongola Health Centre IV pending postmortem examinations. The driver of the Sienta, 35-year-old Prossy Nansamba, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to St. Francis Health Centre in Migyera for treatment.
Twiineamazima said police established that there were no warning signs or safety measures placed around the stationary truck, a factor preliminary findings suggest may have contributed to the crash. Both vehicles were towed to Migyera Police Station as investigations into the incident continue. URN
