The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) proudly announces the commencement of the 2023 Excellence Awards, designed to acknowledge exceptional athletes, officials, and schools actively involved in their competitions.

During an engagement with sports journalists in Kampala on Thursday, Hajji Twahil Kitezaala, the first vice president of USSSA, shared insights into the awards’ purpose, emphasizing their goal to inspire current and aspiring achievers while enhancing the association’s brand.

Categories for the awards include School of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, Fair Play Award, Special Needs Award, and Sports Teacher of the Year. These distinctions will be determined by factors such as trophy count, discipline, and sustained excellence throughout the year, according to Hajji Twahil.

“The selection of winners will involve journalists, sports teachers, team captains, and school coaches actively participating in these competitions,” he added.

Hajji Twahil also called upon all stakeholders to actively contribute to this meaningful journey. He also revealed plans for the imminent launch of a dedicated website providing information and guidelines for the awards.

Rev. Dr. Duncans Mugumya, the Commissioner of Physical Education and Sports, underscored the importance of mass sports in the current landscape, noting that sports is no longer a luxury. He commended USSSA for its innovative approach and expressed optimism about the sector’s continued growth, citing supportive legislation such as the Physical Education & Sports policy and the Sports law.

Zulaika Nabukeera, the General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Schools Head Teachers of Uganda (ASSHU), pledged unwavering support to USSSA. She assured the utilization of their organizational structures to encourage widespread participation from numerous schools in USSSA competitions.
